Julie Cockburn

London-based artist Julie Cockburn searches out vintage photographs at flea markets and on eBay and gives them new meaning by transforming them into delicately embellished works of art. Using needle and thread, Cockburn embroiders colorful geometric forms directly onto the photograph’s surface, often obscuring or partially masking the subject’s face.  The resulting portraits are visually stunning and psychologically acute, deepening the emotional resonance of the found photographs, and lending a disquieting beauty to the forgotten subjects.

Julie Cockburn’s work has been shown in numerous gallery and museum exhibitions including; The New Art Gallery Walsall, The Photographers’ Gallery, London, Arnhem Museum of Modern Art, The Netherlands, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, ICA, London, Wellcome Collection, London, Jerwood Space, London and the Yale Centre for British Art, USA
